Young Fairfield Runners Excel At State Race FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Runners from Tomlinson and Roger Ludlowe schools in Fairfield had strong individual and team performances at the Connecticut Junior Olympic state cross country championships in Litchfield. The Youth Boys team and Midget Girls teams both advanced to the regional race this weekend in Long Island, N.Y. The Youth Boys finished third, while the Midget Girls took second. In the Youth Girls race, Brianna Auray finished fourth in 16:37 on the 4-kilometer course. Balanced Barlow Football Takes Huge Step Toward States REDDING, Conn. – Joel Barlow High School's football team took a huge step toward reaching the Class M state playoffs Thursday with a 29-22 win over Brookfield High School. And the Falcons used a team effort to do it. Alex Lockwood and Billy Wilson scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Falcons (8-1), who can reach the state tournament for the first time with a win over Weston on Thanksgiving Day. Staples Water Polo Wins New Haven Tournament WESTPORT, Conn. – The boys water polo team at Staples High School captured the Hopkins School Tournament in New Haven for the second year in a row. The program has grown in five years at Staples and now has 36 players on varsity and junior varsity teams. The Wreckers are coached by Charlie Gulotta and assistant coach Brandon Barone. Staples plays against New England prep schools, club and YMCA teams and Greenwich, the only other public school in Connecticut with a water polo program. Versatile Stamford Senior Shines For King Football STAMFORD, Conn. – King football standout Joey Santoro thrived wherever coach Dan Gouin put him. On Saturday, the Vikings are counting on the senior from Stamford to play one more big game in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference championships. Barlow Football Team Holds Off Brookfield REDDING, Conn. – Alex Lockwood rushed 171 yards and two touchdowns Thursday to lead Joel Barlow’s football team to a 29-22 win over Brookfield. The Falcons (8-1) meet Weston on Thanksgiving Day, and a victory would secure a playoff berth in the Class M tournament. Billy Wilson added 74 yards rushing and two TDs for Barlow. The victory was not secured until Andrew Cheal recovered an onsides kick with 3:03 remaining, and the Falcons went on to kill the clock behind the running of Lockwood and Wilson. Wilton 7th-Grade Football Falls To Fairfield WILTON, Conn. – The Wilton White seventh-grade football team came into Wednesday’s Fairfield County Football League semifinal against Fairfield confident it could solve the league’s toughest defense. Fairfield 7th-Grade Football Team Zeroes In On Title FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Wildcats’ seventh-grade football team had the best defense all season in the Fairfield County Football League. In Wednesday’s semifinals, the Wildcats beat Wilton White, 8-0, by shutting down the league’s most potent offense. Jack Kovaleski returned an interception 45 yards for the game’s only touchdown late in the third quarter. The Wildcats’ defense was also responsible for the only other points, a safety in the fourth quarter when a Wilton runner was tackled in the end zone. Darien 6th-Grade Blue Football Falls In League Semis DARIEN, Conn. ? The Darien Blue sixth-grade football team lost by two points during the regular season to the Fairfield Wildcats in the Fairfield County Football League. Fairfield 6th-Graders Reach Football Title Game FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Wildcats sixth-grade football team squeaked past Darien Blue, 8-6, during their regular season meeting in September. Norwalk Crews Shine In California Regatta NORWALK, Conn. – Faced with heavy graduation losses for a second straight year, Connecticut Boat Club coach Liz Trond figured the Norwalk-based team might need time to rebuild.
