Fairfield Youth Basketball Program Seeks Players FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Basketball players in fifth through eighth grade interested in trying out for the Fairfield PAL basketball teams can soon sign up. Sign-up sheets can be downloaded at from the organization's website or picked up at The Higgins Group office at 1530 Post Road from Tuesday, Sept. 11 through Friday, Sept. 21.  Teams participate in the competitive Fairfield County Basketball League.  PAL Basketball is for the more serious, dedicated youth basketball players.  Forms need to be returned to Paul Krumins at P.O. Stamford, Greenwich Rowers Compete At Paralympics STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford’s Alexandra Stein and Greenwich’s Andrew Johnson rowed their first race for the United States Friday in the Paralympic Games in London. Rowing on the same course used in the Summer Olympics, Johnson and Stein helped the U.S. Mixed Coxed Four finished second in its heat. The U.S. team will compete in the repechage Saturday. The finals are Sunday. Johnson, who began rowing at the Greenwich Rowing Club and also rowed for Norwalk River Rowing, is a four-year member of the U.S. national team. Darien Softball Coach Finds Hits With His Country Band DARIEN, Conn. – Nick DeMaio changes hats for the summer, swapping his Darien softball cap for the cowboy hat he wears as the lead vocalist in his country and western band, Gunsmoke. DeMaio, coach of the Darien High School softball team, performs with his brother, Jeff, who plays pedal steel guitar and sings, and his father, also named Nick. The elder DeMaio, whose nickname is “The Ambassador,” is a guitarist and singer. Scott Tyler and Gary Tokarz also play in the band. Sports 'Persons Of The Year' Named in Fairfield County FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Olympians from New Canaan, Darien and Fairfield have been named Sports Persons of the Year in their communities and will be honored at the eighth annual Fairfield County Sports Night on Oct. 15. New Canaan’s Charlie Cole, Darien’s Rob Crane and Fairfield’s Craig Kinsley were chosen by a committee in each town. Each was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from August 2011 to August 2012. The three competed at the London Games, and Cole won a bronze medal in rowing. Greenwich Triathlete Blows Away Rivals GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich’s Reenie Parker did not just win her age group at Sunday’s Mossman Park City Triathlon in Bridgeport. Parker could have slept in or taken a lunch break and still finished first. Parker completed the Olympic distance event in 2:26:40, and was 29:14 ahead of Margaret Deluca of Waccabuc, N.Y., in the 50-54 age group. She was the seventh woman overall, and third among women from Connecticut. Of the seven women who finished ahead of Parker, six were under the age of 24. Wilton Woman Latest To Break Westport Race Record WESTPORT, Conn. – Wilton's Mary Zengo became the third runner this summer to re-write the record book in the 50th anniversary season of the Westport Summer Series last Saturday. Zengo, Amy Bevilaqua of Wilton and former Darien High running standout Chase Pizzonia established new marks this summer. Bevilaqua and Pizzonia did it on the same day, Aug. 11, in the 6.85-mile race.
