New Canaan Syncho Swimmers Roll at Regionals NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swim Team qualified 48 athletes for the upcoming Age Group Nationals with a strong performance at the regional championships in Schenectady, N.Y.  The large Aquianas team of 63 athletes competed against 87 other athletes from three synchronized swimming teams at the Regional Championship.   “Our team has grown dramatically in recent years,” said head coach Jen Muzyk, “but our athletes continue to show strong team work and sportsmanship.” The Aquianas started the competition off strong with the 10-and-under intermediates.  In the …

Norwalk Girls Soccer Team Wins Holiday Tournament NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Sonics under-13 girls’ soccer team went undefeated to win its division in a Memorial Day tournament in Scarsdale, N.Y. for the fourth straight year. In the first game, Saturday afternoon against Scarsdale Galaxy, Norwalk quickly dominated with Nazae Craw scoring on a direct free kick. Christy Russo, Lindsay McEwan and Melissa Guzman all scored goals before Scarsdale was able to get one back. The game ended six minutes early due to a thunderstorm. Darien Football Players Earn Scholarships DARIEN, Conn. — Nine Darien High seniors received Coleman Mix Scholarship Awards from the Darien Junior Football League last week during the Darien High School Senior Scholarship Ceremony. All recipients played junior football before playing for the Darien High School varsity team. Guy Wisinski, one of their coaches in the league, presented the awards. Westhill Athletes Shine at State Track Meet STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill’s Kiara Kallaway and Claire Howlett had top five finishes at Wednesday’s Class LL track and field championships at Manchester High School. For the boys, pole vaulters Evan McCafferty and Billy Thibault had top five finishes, and Sam Lagasse was seventh in the 3,200. Kallaway finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 47.56. Howlett took fifth in the 3,200 in 11:20.28, her best time of the year. She was less than two seconds out of third. McCafferty cleared 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to finish tied for third. Greenwich Athletes Win State Track Titles GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich’s Robert Gelcius won two individual events while Abby Markowitz won one race and helped a relay take first place at Wednesday’s Class LL track and field championships at Manchester High School. Gelcius won the shot put and javelin for the Cardinals, who finished eighth with 40 points. Markowitz won the 800  and was part of the victorious 4 x 400 relay. This is no ordinary walk in the park, however, for the Stamford family. Katz and her daughters Tori, 13; Abigail, 15; and Jillian, 17, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Climb for a Cure 2 is a fundraiser for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. Rett syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system that leads to developmental reversals, especially in expressive language and hand use. McMahon Sprinters Win 3 Events at State Track NORWALK, Conn. – Brien McMahon senior Shelly Lindo won two events and Sarah Boyd took another to lead the Senators to a fourth-place finish in the Class LL track and field championships Wednesday at Manchester High School. Lindo won the 100 in 12.24 and the 200 in 25.2. She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles. Boyd took second in the 100, won the 100 hurdles and was third in the 300 hurdles. Staples Boys Capture Class LL Track Title WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples boys track and field team won the Class LL title as junior distance runner Henry Wynne won two events to lead the Wreckers in Wednesday’s championship meet at Manchester High School. Lexie Schachne and Emily Troelstra won events in the girls championships to lead Staples to a seventh-place finish. Wynne ran a class record 4:10.35 in the 1,600, breaking the record of 4:12.11 set by former Staples runner Tom Sheeran in 1989. Wynne was unchallenged, too, as Xavier’s David Pugliese ran 4:18.04.
