2 New Canaan Athletes Win League Track Events NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan’s Stephanie Benko lost a close race in the 3,200 last year to former teammate Caroline Murray in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships. Tuesday, Benko ran the perfect race at the perfect time to win the league title. The senior waited until the final lap before pulling away from Ridgefield’s Sarah Guillaume. She won in 11:19:96, her best time this year by a startling 21 seconds. Benko had the only win of the day for the New Canaan girls, who finished eighth with 38.5 points. Staples Boys Track Ends Long Title Drought WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High’s track and field team ended Danbury’s 11-year run atop the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference with a resounding victory in Tuesday’s league championship meet at Danbury. Led by two wins by junior Henry Wynne, Staples put up 147.5 points to easily outdistance Danbury, which finished with 82.5. According to the league website, it was the Wreckers’ first outdoor league title since 1990. They had finished second to Danbury nine times during the Hatters’ decade-plus-one run. Norwalk, McMahon Runners Win Track Titles NORWALK, Conn. – Brien McMahon’s Shelly Lindo and Norwalk’s Adam Robertino had memorable performances in their final Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championship meet. Lindo won three events, while Robertino became a rare three-time winner in one race when he captured the 110-meter high hurdles. Lindo led the McMahon girls to a fifth-place finish with 59 points. Darien Girls Win League Track Title DARIEN, Conn. – Darien’s girls track and field team picked up its first league title since 2008 on Tuesday at Danbury High School. And with sophomore Catherine Lacy around for the next few years, coach Steve Norris has a standout athlete to lead future teams. Lacy won the high jump and the long jump and added a third-place finish in the 200. She was one of many bright spots for Darien, which piled up 115 points. Norwalk-Based Crews Win Six Golds at Regional Meet FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – In a supposed rebuilding year, the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club proved again that it is one of the best all-girls rowing clubs in the country. The team came home from Sunday’s Northeast Regional championships in Worcester, Mass., with six gold medals and a silver while qualifying two crews for next month’s U.S. Youth Nationals. The meet included 337 entries from 34 clubs and six states.  The team’s signature victory came with its Women’s Youth 8+, which won gold in 6:57.431. Westport Club Rows to 10 Medals at Northeast Meet WESTPORT, Conn. – Saugatuck Rowing Club of Westport qualified seven boats for the U.S. Youth Nationals and won 10 medals Sunday at the Northeast Regional championships in Worcester, Mass. Saugatuck won three gold medals, including the Boys Varsity 8+. The team also won three silver medals and four bronze medals.
