Fairfield County Paddle Tennis Players Have Racket in Wilton WILTON, Conn. – Paddle tennis players from Fairfield County and other nearby communities whacked returns, slammed serves and hustled around courts at several sites Saturday in the 29th annual Wilton Open. Sixty-four two-man teams played in A and B draws of the tournament, which is the season-ending event for the paddle tennis community. The sport has become an increasingly popular winter activity and moves more briskly than traditional tennis matches. Big Names on Board for Triathlon in Stamford FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Easton resident Chris Thomas, named 2011 male triathlete of the year by Timex and USA Triathlon Amateur Athlete of the year in 2009, will join forces with ex-New York Knick Allan Houston, Gov. Dannel Malloy and Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia as the chairmen of the 2012 Stamford KIC IT Triathlon. The race is scheduled for July 1. New Canaan Swimmer Helps Cal Win National Title NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan swimmer Christian Higgins helped the University of California win its second straight NCAA championship Saturday in Federal Way, Wash. Higgins finished 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 20th in the 200 breaststroke. In the Pac-12 championship meet, Higgins took second in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 breaststroke to help Cal finish in second place. Higgins will head to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. for two weeks in May. Tryouts Planned for Norwalk U12 Softball Team NORWALK, Conn. – Tryouts for the Norwalk Riptide 12-and-under softball team will be held Wednesday, March 28, and Sunday, April 1. Players who were 12 years old or under as of Dec. 31, 2011, are eligible. The March 28 tryout begins at 6:30 p.m. at Marvin School. The April 1 tryout begins at 3 p.m. at Norwalk High School. Norwalk Cal Ripken Teams Hold Tryouts NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Cal Ripken baseball league held its tryouts last Saturday at Sono Fieldhouse. Teams begin practice this weekend. There will be four major league teams for players ages 11 and 12, and five minor league teams for players ages 9 and 10. Young Wilton Wrestler Takes Third in Districts WILTON, Conn. – Wilton sixth-grader Zach Zeyher took third place Sunday in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association District Tournament in Willimantic. The Wilton wrestler competed in a seven-man bracket in the 95-pound intermediate weight class. He won his first match 4-0 against an opponent from Newtown.
