Westhill Girl Takes Sixth in 3,200 at State Open STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill sophomore Claire Howlett finished sixth in the 3,200 in Saturday’s State Open Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Howlett ran 11:21.38, an improvement by more than six seconds over her seeded time. Reid Watson of Glastonbury won the race in 10:52:52. Howlett tucked into sixth place early in the race and finished about six seconds clear of the next runner. McMahon, Norwalk Runners Compete at State Open NORWALK, Conn. – Brien McMahon’s Shelly Lindo took second in the 55 meter dash to lead performances from athletes at Norwalk schools in Saturday’s State Open Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Lindo also finished fourth in the 55 meter hurdles. Adam Robertino and Crystle Hill were Norwalk’s top performers. Robertino was fourth in the 55 meter hurdles and Hill was fourth in the girls 55 meter dash. Lindo ran 7.20 in the finals of the 55. Santina Williams of Prince Tech won in 7.18. Hill ran 7.39. Staples Boys Run to State Open Crown WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High School boys track team returned to the top of the state mountain Saturday, winning the State Open championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Henry Wynne won the 1,000 and ran legs on two winning relays to lead the Wreckers to 47 team points. Hillhouse finished second with 34, and Greenwich was third with 31. Staples Girl Wins Pole Vault at State Open WESTPORT, Conn. – Lexie Schachne won the pole vault in Saturday’s State Open to lead the performances of Staples girls in the meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Schachne, a senior, won the event with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches. She was the only girl to clear that height. Schachne made three attempts at the state record of 12 feet, 2 inches, but missed each time.  It was the first State Open win for Schachne, who finished second last year. New Canaan Soccer Star Commits to UConn NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – New Canaan High School soccer star Jon-Luke Ferrandino will join the storied men's soccer program at the University of Connecticut in the fall. Ferrandino scored 40 goals and delivered 29 assists during his career at New Canaan, which won the Class L state championship in 2010. Fairfield County Runners Cruise at Colgate WILTON, Conn. – Wilton’s Kendall Lyons and Darien’s Megan Keane had strong performances for the Colgate University women’s track and field team in a meet last weekend at Boston University. Lyons, a senior captain who ran for Wilton High, ran a personal best 2:59.1 in the 1,000 meters. Keane, a freshman who ran for Darien High, had a personal best of 2:17.41 in the 800.
