Runners Show Holiday Spirit at Fairfield Race FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A record number of runners found the holiday spirit Sunday when 306 finishers hit the tape at the 5-kilometer Holiday Run for Toys at the Scandinavian Club in Fairfield. Fairfield’s Christopher Barrett and Wilton’s Amy Bevilaqua finished first in the men’s and women’s divisions. The big winners, however, were the children who will receive toys from the runners. Notre Dame Wins Newtown Tournament FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Arkell Miles scored 17 points on his way to most valuable player honors as Notre Dame of Fairfield ripped Newtown High, 72-47, in the championship game of the Newtown Tipoff Tournament on Friday night. The Lancers (2-0) led 48-16 at halftime with improved playing after a lackluster win over Bunnell High the previous night. Staples Girls Suffer First Loss WESTPORT, Conn – Stamford outscored Staples, 18-6, in the final period Friday to defeat the Wreckers, 43-34, in a battle of previously undefeated girls basketball teams. Staples led 20-17 at halftime and was still up by three, 28-25, entering the final period. But Stamford pulled away down the stretch, paced by 15 points by Kelsey Cognetta and 10 by Kelsey Santagata. Erica Stein and Jess Coelho scored 12 each for the Wreckers. Coelho added eight rebounds while Remy Nolan had four steals. Staples hosts Trinity Catholic in another key girls game Tuesday in Westport at 7 p.m.

Skyliners Skaters Strike Gold in Several Meets FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The Skyliners synchronized skating team has earned a variety of medals in competitions in Massachusetts, Michigan and Stamford during a busy stretch of the competitive season. The Skyliners include girls from many Fairfield County communities. Synchronized skating, originally called precision skating, consists of 12 to 20 athletes skating on ice at one time, moving as one flowing unit at high speeds. Fairfield Race Gives Runners a Final Shot FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Runners looking to get one final race in before the new year will have a chance Sunday in the 13th Holiday Run for Toys. The 5K race begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Scandinavian Club on South Pine Creek Road in Fairfield. The race is the final running event of the year in lower Fairfield County. Runners can register beginning at 8:15 a.m. for $10 and a new unwrapped toy. The race features post-race food, and the course will include a short segment along a trail, if conditions permit. Weston Football Players Earn First-Team Honors WESTON, Conn. – Four players from the Weston High football team earned first-team honors in the SouthWest Conference. Matt Keeney, Dan Rogers, Erik Dammen Brower and Tyler Hassett were among the first-team honorees. Grayson Keith, Justin Schaffer and J.D. Staples Football Players Earn League Honors WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples coach Marce Petroccio was named the West Division coach of the year and seven Wreckers earned first-team honors as the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced its all-league selections.
