Greens Farms Girls Trounced by King WESTPORT, Conn. – Greens Farms Academy girls basketball coach Jen Doughty has an inexperienced squad taking the floor this winter for the Dragons, so she expects tough games such as Monday’s 39-20 loss to King. “These girls are going to be fine,’’ Doughty said. “They are just learning the basics right now.” King took advantage of the Dragons’ inexperience, particularly that of its guards, to force 29 turnovers. Darien Football Players Lay Wreaths for Soldiers DARIEN, Conn. – Members of the Darien High School football team helped Wreaths Across America lay 500 Christmas wreaths on the graves of fallen soldiers Saturday.  Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit group that remembers, honors and teaches children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families. Their mission includes coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies on the second Saturday of December at Arlington Cemetery as well at veterans' cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states.

Darien Names New Football Captains DARIEN, Conn. — The Darien High School football team concluded its successful 8-2 season with a banquet honoring the team and individual players and naming the captains for 2012. Sacred Heart Holds Off Lafayette FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Shane Gibson scored 22 points and Stamford’s Chris Evans added 16 as Sacred Heart University snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with a 84-79 victory over Lafayette. Norwalk’s Evan Kelley added nine points for the Pioneers (6-6). Gibson pulled in seven rebounds while Evans, a sophomore, had four rebounds and three assists. New Canaan 6th Graders Fall to Stamford NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan Red sixth grade boys basketball team fell to the Stamford Jewish Community Center, 51-28, in a Fairfield County Basketball League game at Saxe Middle School. New Canaan trailed 28-15 at halftime as Jack Nowell, Zach Miller and Matt Knight made some nice shots. Sacred Heart Women Roll to 9-1 FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Gabrielle Washington scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Sacred Heart University women’s basketball team to its ninth win in 10 games Sunday, a 89-69 rout of Cal Poly. Washington, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz.,  paced four players in double figures for Sacred Heart. Callan Taylor added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers. Kiley Evans scored 13 and Ericka Norman had 10 points and nine assists. Sacred Heart kicks off a three-game road trip Sunday at Albany.

Fairfield Rolls to 4th Straight Victory FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s basketball team defeated the University of New Hampshire Sunday, 58-52,  for its fourth straight victory. Ryan Olander scored 19 points and Derek Needham added 15 for the Stags. The game was played in Bridgeport. New Hampshire scored the opening basket, but that was the Wildcats’ only led of the game.
