Johnson, Konandreas Repeat as Stamford Golf Champs STAMFORD, Conn. Debbie Johnson won her fourth women's title and Dr. Lukas Konandreas won his second straight men's senior division title Sunday at the final round of the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship at Sterling Farms. Johnson, who also won last year, and Konandreas were joined in the winner's circle by Alexander Rossetti, a June graduate of Westhill High School who captured the men's championship flight. Weston Swimmer Sets League Mark at Division Meet WESTON, Conn. -- Charlie Palsho broke a 13-year-old league record to lead the Weston Field Club to a third-place team finish in the Fairfield County Swimming League Division 5 championships Saturday at Tamarack Country Club. The host club took team honors. With a time of 17.12, Palsho broke E.J. Verrico's 1998 mark of 17.62 in the 25-meter breaststroke. He also added victories in the 25-meter butterfly and 100-meter individual medley. Lifters Push Their Limits in Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. -- Weightlifters from the Northeast pumped iron, and lots of it, at Sunday's Connecticut Open at Bluestreak Sports Training in Stamford. The meet was conducted by the Team Connecticut Olympic Weightlifting Club, a Wilton-based organization run by Stamford native Gary Valentine. Lifters competed in the snatch and clean and jerk. Athletes competed in weight classifications in men's, women's and junior divisions. Athletes were competing in open, master and Crossfit classifications. Teenager Takes Stamford Amateur Golf Title STAMFORD, Conn. Three players were tied for the lead going into the final two holes of Sunday's final round of the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship at Sterling Farms. The youngest, Alexander Rossetti, played them the best. Rossetti, a June graduate of Westhill High School, shot a 6-over-par 78 to finish at 225 for the 54-hole tournament. He won by one stroke over Jim Romaniello and Cahal McMonagle, who each shot 79 in the final round. The difference was the 17th hole. The Fairfield Rage 13-and-under baseball team won the East Shore Travel League championship last week with a 3-2 victory over the CT Revolution. Southport Girl Wins Gold at Junior World Rowing FAIRFIELD, Conn. Southport's Lucy Grinalds helped the United States win the gold medal in the Women's Four at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Eton, Great Britain. Grinalds, who will attend Harvard, rowed for the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club. Her CBC coach, Liz Trond, coached the four at the world meet. "I'm ecstatic right now. I can't believe it all came together. Ripken All-Stars Rally for Kinlock Win NORWALK, Conn. -- It took a last-inning rally by the Cal Ripken all-stars to knock off a resilient Little League 12-year-old all-star squad, 10-9, in the opener of the Kinlock tournament. The annual intercity competition pits 11- and 12-year-old all-stars from Norwalk's three youth leagues: Little League, Cal Ripken and Cranbury. Fairfield American Rolls in New England Opener FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield American Little League All-Stars opened the defense of their New England Region title Friday with a 17-0 rout of Vermont. Fairfield will try to go to 2-0 Saturday when it plays Maine at 8 p.m. in Bristol. Fairfield scored 10 runs in its first at bat of Friday's game, which was halted after 3 ½ innings. Stamford Triathlete Rolls Toward Greenwich, China STAMFORD, Conn. John Cook got a flat tire in his first triathlon, the Greenwich Cup Sprint back in the early 1990s. It was at the bottom of Palmer Hill Road, said the Stamford resident, who, at 76, is now one of the top age-group athletes in the world.
