Recreational Races Abound This Weekend FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Running events in Norwalk and Westport and multi-sport competitions in Darien and Greenwich are among the alternatives for recreational athletes this weekend. In Darien, the ITPMAN Swim.Run for ITP and the ITP Kids Splash and Dash begins at Weed Beach at 7 a.m. The events replace the ITPMan Triathlon, which organizers hope will return next year. Young Fairfield Football Players Hit the Fields FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Players from the Fairfield Giants began practicing this week for the upcoming season. The teams and cheerleaders practice each night at Sullivan Field on Old Dam Road. There are six divisions of football -- including flag football -- with players ranging in age from 7 to 14. In the past four years, the Giants have won four state championships, three regional titles and its Pee Wee team finished second in the nation in 2007. Fairfield American Opens Against Vermont FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield American Little League All-Stars open play in the New England Regional Friday against Vermont. Game time is 8:15 at Leon J. Breen Field in Bristol. Vemont's team comes from Barre. The other teams in the New England Regional are Cumberland American of Rhode Island, Goffstown of New Hampshire, Yarmouth of Maine and Andover National of Massachusetts. Junior Rowers Off to Fast Start at World Meet Southport's Lucy Grinalds helped the U.S. Women's Four win its heat Thursday at the World Rowing Junior Championships in England. Her sister, Rosie, also competed Thursday along with rowers from Westport, Weston and New Canaan. Grinalds and her crew won in 7:20.26 to finish nearly five seconds ahead of Germany. Grinalds is among three girls on the team that won a silver medal last year in the Women's Four. The victory secured the foursome a berth in Saturday's finals. Wildcats Grab 4th in State Softball Tournament NORWALK, Conn. The Wildcats softball team of the Norwalk Recreation and Parks league finished fourth in the recent state tournament and earned a berth in next month's American Softball Association national tournament in Salem, Va. The Wildcats will compete in the ASA Class D Nationals in September. The Aces, who also compete in Norwalk, have also qualified for the Class D nationals. Stamford To Host State Weightlifting Championships STAMFORD, Conn. The Connecticut Olympic Weightlifting Championships come to Blue Streak Sports Training in Stamford Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The meet is sponsored by Wilton-based Team Connecticut Olympic Weightlifting Club, run by Stamford native Gary Valentine. Men and women will compete in a variety of weight classes and age divisions. This will be the third year Blue Streak has hosted the event, which started in Torrington in 1970. Local Rowers Earn Berths on U.S. Team Two rowers from Fairfield County earned berths Thursday on the United States team that will compete in the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Rowayton's Brian de Regt and New Canaan's Andrew Campbell won races Thursday in the national selection regatta in West Windsor, N.J. Norwalk's Dan Walsh and New Canaan's Charlie Cole had secured berths on the U.S. team earlier this summer. The meet in Slovenia begins on Aug. 28. Norwalk's Run Ends in Babe Ruth Regional NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk's 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars battled for three victories in the losers bracket of the New England Regional. The mental and physical toll was evident in Wednesday's game against Central Maine. The Maine champions took out Norwalk, 6-3, at Brien McMahon High School. Stamford White Sox Fall in League Final STAMFORD, Conn. The Pelham Mets defeated the Stamford White Sox, 7-2, to win the Westchester Baseball Association championship Sunday. Pelham won the regular season title, while the White Sox were the defending league champions. The game was tied at 2-2 in the fifth before Pelham took advantage of several White Sox miscues to pull ahead.
