Action-Packed Jamboree Keeps Kids Moving STAMFORD, Conn. Kids ran, threw, hopped, hula-hooped and most importantly, burned calories, at the first annual jamboree hosted by the Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy Wednesday at Norwalk High School. Norwalk Pitcher Shines in Summer College League NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk's Matt Iannazzo earned Pitcher of the Night honors in the Northwoods League after a brilliant outing last week for the St. Cloud River Bats. Iannazzo, a rising senior at the University of Pittsburgh, threw eight strong innings in a 2-1 win over the Duluth Huskies. He allowed five hits and struck out eight to improve to 4-0 on the season with a 1.56 ERA. Iannazzo has allowed six earned runs in six starts this summer. Diurno Helps Norwalk Stay Alive in Ruth Regional NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk manager Tom Cossuto gave Matt Diurno a pop quiz Monday in the 13-year-old New England Regional. His pitcher passed it brilliantly, and even picked up a few extra credits with a timely hit as Norwalk staved off elimination with a 4-1 victory over Plymouth, Mass. at Brien McMahon High School. Norwalk 11s Finish 2nd in State Tournament NORWALK, Conn. The budding Newtown-Norwalk rivalry took another turn Saturday at Rogers Park in Danbury. The Cal Ripken Norwalk 11s rallied from 5-0 down with three runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning Newtown fought back with three runs to win it, 8-7. Westport Vaulter Takes 4th at Junior Olympics WESTPORT, Conn. Westport's Lexie Schachne finished fourth last week in the pole vault at the U.S.A. Track and Field Junior Olympic championships in Wichita, Kan. Schachne cleared 12 feet, 1 ½ inches to earn All-America honors in the event. The field included 38 athletes. Competitors battled brutal conditions, including 100-degree heat. The competition was delayed for an hour due to lightning. Swimmers Splash to 5th at Nationals WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Wahoos swim team finished in fifth place overall at the YMCA Long Course Nationals Swimming Championship held at Georgia Tech University. The Wahoos were the top team from Connecticut despite missing their top men swimmers, who are getting ready for the U.S. National Championships in California. The women led the way, finishing second while the men came in 19th. Norwalk Riptide Finish 3rd in New England LYNN, Mass. The Norwalk Riptide 14-and-under softball team lost 4-3 in 12 innings to Lynn, Mass., Sunday in the losers' bracket final of the New England Regional. The Riptide settled for a third place finish in the New England Regional for the second consecutive year. Lynn loaded the bases in the 12th. The winning run scored on a slow roller up the first base line. Norwalk tried to get the force at home but the Massachusetts runner beat the throw.
