Fairfield American scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Wilton, 12-0, in the final pool play game for both teams in the Section 1 tournament for 10- and 11-year-old baseball players. The game had little meaning for the teams. Both had already qualified for the Section 1 championship game, which will be played Wednesday at Blackham School in Bridgeport at 5:30 p.m. Fairfield American finished pool play with a 4-0 mark, while Wilton finished 3-1. Fairfield Drops First Game in East Regional FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball team lost its first game in the East Regional tournament at Bristol Monday, a 4-3 setback to Rhode Island. Fairfield finishes pool play 3-1, and advances to the single-elimination round Thursday. Seeds still have to be determined for the single-elimination round. Darien 13s Win Playoff Opener DARIEN, Conn. Stephen Barston's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Darien 13-year-old baseball team a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bethel on Tuesday in the first round of the I-84 playoffs at Holohan Field in Darien. Darien advances to play No. 1 seed Newtown on Wednesday. Michael O'Malley led off the winning inning with a walk, stole second base, went to third on an error and scored on Barston's hit. Blue Jays Win War at the Shore Tournament WESTPORT, Conn. The Connecticut Blue Jays under-13 team won the War at the Shore Summer Bash tournament last weekend in East Lyme. The Jays also finished third in the national AAU tournament earlier this month in Orlando, Fla. The team includes Westport players Evan Gilland, Topher Brown, Garrett Stonehouse, Noah Yokoi, Ben Casparius and Nathan Panzer. North Stamford Finishes Strong in Sectional STAMFORD, Conn. North Stamford's Little League All-Stars closed out their Section 1 tournament Monday with an 11-3 thumping of North Haven. The team finished 2-2 in the tournament, tied with East Haven and Shelton National, and narrowly missed making the Section 1 championship game. North Stamford needed to win by about 14 runs against East Haven to advance to the title contest. With three teams tied at 2-2, the difference came down to a mathematical formula involving runs allowed and defensive innings. Fairfield American Roars Into Section1 Final FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield American Little League All-Stars finished Section 1 pool play Monday without a loss. They are now just one win away from playing for another state championship. Fairfield American pounded Shelton National on Monday, 12-2, setting up a rematch against East Haven in the championship game Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Orange. New Race Emerges After Triathlon Is Canceled DARIEN, Conn. Options are drying up for Fairfield County triathletes seeking a late summer event. The Fairfield Triathlon was canceled earlier this year, and the ITPMAN Triathlon in Darien bowed out in June. But there's some good news: The ITP Foundation will have an event Aug. 6 in which athletes can choose to run, to swim or to do both. A children's event also will be held. This year's triathlon was canceled because of renovation work at Weed Beach, the race's starting point. Wilton Swimmers Start Strong at Nationals WILTON, Conn. Matt Moen and Verity Abel finished in the top five in the 1500 freestyle Monday to lead a strong performance by Wilton Wahoo swimmers in the YMCA National Long Course championships. The meet is being held at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta. Moen, 16, took fourth place in 16:25.89. Stephen Holmquist, 14, finished 15th in 16:54.17 and Cody Bond, 15, was 22nd in 17:05.01.
