Staples Senior Wins Open Title in Tennis Staples senior Danny Hirschberg wrapped up a spectacular season in style Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Foran's Bradley Orban in the finals of the State Open tennis tournament at Hamden High School. Hirschberg, who will play next year at Brown University, became the first Staples player since Alex Jacobs in 2001 to win the State Open title. Hirschberg rolled through the Open without dropping a set in defeating Darien's Gavin McNulty, Avon's Sam Flaxman and Daniel Hand's Scott Rubinstein en route to the championship. Connecticut Boat Club Crowns National Champions Connecticut Boat Club crowned one champion and took home a bronze medal Sunday at the U.S. Youth Nationals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. CBC is based in Norwalk and includes rowers from many Fairfield County communities. Southport sisters Lucy and Rosie Grinalds won the Women's Youth 2- A final in 8:02.15. Free-Throw Contest Supports Program at Norwalk Y The Norwalk YMCA will hold a free throw competition Friday from 6-9 p.m. The YMCA hopes to raise $3,000 in donations for a program run in partnership with the Allan Houston Legacy Foundation. The Summer F.I.S.L.L. (Faith, Integriy, Sacrifice, Leadership, Legacy) program was developed by Houston, a former Knick who is now the team's assistant general manager. Lennox Cooks Up Win in Greenwich Buns Run Daniel Lennox was the winner of the Whole Foods Cook Your Buns Run & BBQ 3-mile race last week at Tod's Point in Old Greenwich. Lennox, 31, from Bedford, N.Y., had a time of 15 minutes, 19 seconds to come in first out of the 412 finishers. Victor Dahl, 18, of Greenwich was runner-up at 15:27, and Stamford's Anatolie Vartosu, 43, placed third at 15:44. Jeff Eades, 30, placed fourth and won his Men 39-39 age division in 16:22, while Stamford's Jeff Watson, 28, took fifth with 16:24 and won the Men 20-29 age division. They finished in second place in their division and earned runner-up honors at the Scarsdale Memorial Day Tournament. Greenwich Crew Competes at Nationals Two Greenwich Crew teams competed last weekend in the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The lightweight 8+ consisting of coxswain Giulia Volterra (sophomore), Julie Sussman (senior), Chelsea Oarr (junior), Lara Tiramani (senior, captain), Sophie Grueterich (senior), Whitney Lees (sophomore), Nicole Birkhold (junior), Gillian Burke (sophomore) and Maddie Harrison (junior) and the 1x rowed by Hannah Balikci (junior) raced in Tennessee. TPT Engravers, Schwartz Law Rule Norwalk Ripken TPT Engravers and Schwartz Law were crowned champions of the Norwalk Cal Ripken Major Division (11- and 12-year-olds) and Minor Division (9- and 10-year-olds). In the Major Division final, TPT edged Pirro's Players, 2-1, in extra innings, while Schwartz Law held off the Original Swanky Franks, 8-6, to capture the Minor Division title.
