After False Start, Fagan Thrived for UConn Norwalk native Donna Fagan remembers her first at-bat with the University of Connecticut softball team. "I hit the ball to shortstop, and coming out of the box I got a little top heavy and fell over,'' she said. "Fortunately, there was an overthrow, and I got to first base." Things got much better after that. She was inducted into the University of Connecticut wing of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame earlier this month at UConn-Stamford. Staples Wins 2 Events at New Englands Staples track and field athletes won two events and set three school records at Saturday's New England Championships in Burlington, Vt. The boys 4 x 400 relay won its second straight New England title with Sean Gallagher, Jonathan Heil, Raphael Ray and John Roche. Pole vaulter Lexie Schachne also captured New England honors by clearing 11 feet, nine inches. Staples won the 4 x 400 in 3:19.26 with the same quartet that won last year's race. Fairfield County Athletes Reach New England Podium Fairfield Prep's Connor Rog finished second in the 3,200 meters while New Canaan's Caroline Murray reached podium in the 1,600 and 3,200 as athletes from Main Street Connect communities competed in the New England track and field championships in Burlington, Vt. Staples athletes also won two events at the meet. Rog ran 9:09.41 in the 3,200, which was won by Massachusetts junior Chris Allen. He ran 9:05.97. Weston's Stephen Vento finished ninth. Beachside 16s Net State Soccer Title Beachside Soccer Club's under-16 boys team won its fourth straight Premier Cup championship with a victory in penalty kicks over FSA United. It was the fourth straight year Beachside has defeated FSA in the championship game. The victory was one of four Premier Cup victories for Beachside. The under-12, under-15 and under-17 teams also earned Premier Cup crowns. Beachside is coached by Stamford's Peter Doneit. It includes players from Norwalk, Westport and Fairfield. Kids Race at Wakeman Helps End Hunger A 2-mile road race for children in Grades 3 to 12 will be held at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club on July 9 at 9:30 a.m. The kids-only race participants will join nearly 25,000 other youth across the United States to raise awareness and funds for global malnutrition programs. Participants get to help end acute malnutrition by paying the race fee of $15, which will go directly to Action Against Hunger. This one may have hurt coach Chris Smalkais even more than in 2010. Prep fell to Ridgefield, 11-10, in the Class L championship game at Brien McMahon High School on Saturday.
