Stamford U17 Legion Nips Greenwich The Stamford Junior Legion opened its season with a 1-0 win over Greenwich behind an outstanding pitching performance by Logan McCullough as well as a strong defense. McCullough went the distance, lasting seven innings, allowing only two base hits, walking two batters and striking out seven. In a close and well-played game, Stamford capitalized on a two-out RBI single by Nick Palumbo, which ended up being the only run of the game. Billy Druehl also helped the offense with two hits. Kids Swim, Ride, Run at Norwalk Triathlon Columbus Magnet School held its popular triathlon Saturday at Norwalk High School. Students from the school in kindergarten through Grade 5 rode bikes, swam in the pool and ran around the track. Physical education teacher Smith Mowry coordinated the event. The children competed at various distances, according to their grade level, and prizes were awarded for each grade. Stamford U16 Legion Wins a Pair Stamford Legion's 16-and-under team went two for two over the weekend with wins over the Easton Cardinals and Westport. In the first game, against the Easton Cardinals, Jack Schwoener threw a shutout, 9-0, and added two doubles. Dom Colarossi also had two hits and an RBI. In the game against Westport, Randy Polonia pitched five shutout innings and added two hits as Stamford defeated Westport, 10-1. Fairfield County Athletes Set for State Open Track The state's top runners, throwers and jumpers will be in action Monday at New Britain's Willowbrook Park for the State Open track and field meet. Several races will be of particular interest to Main Street Connect communities whose athletes are top seeds. One of the races with the most interest will be the boys 3,200 meters, where Fairfield Prep's Connor Rog is the top seed. Now, the Blue Wave is two victories away from adding another chapter to its history book. Intensity Hosts Tennis Fundraiser for Africa Sixteen of the top teaching professionals in Fairfield County will compete for a $500 cash prize June 11 at Intensity Fitness and Tennis Club in Norwalk. The event will benefit Oyebog Tennis Academy, a not-for-profit tennis program for children in Cameroon. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $75 at the door and $50 if purchased in advance. Wilton Runners Earn Top Seeds Nineteen athletes from the Wilton Running Club were chosen to compete in the first Western Connecticut Conference Middle School Track and Field Championship to be held at Newtown High School on Wednesday. The Western Connecticut Conference is made up of 11 teams from Fairfield County. Wilton Athletes Medal at State Track Wilton's Ned Hemmerle won the pole vault while Jesse Socci finished second in one event and third in another as the boys track team finished fourth at the Class L championships Thursday at Middletown High School.
