Young Lacrosse Players Hit the Field The Norwalk Lacrosse Association came out winners during Saturday's Lacrosse Day at Norwalk High School. The day featured seven games, starting at 8 a.m., and culminated with the showdown between Norwalk and Brien McMahon High Schools. Among the teams in action were the Under 9 Bantam Underdogs, coached by Christopher Bean. The Underdogs played their first game of the year against Monroe. The teams did not keep score. Drop Anchor in Nrra's Community Challenge The Norwalk River Rowing Association welcomes teams for its third annual Community Challenge. Training begins the week of May 16 and the championship race and party are scheduled for June 25. Organizations can register in 10-person or five-person teams. Teams get six weeks of training as well as a promotion of teamwork and community spirit and a fun-filled race day and party. There are two competition levels. Darien, Riverside Women Spark Dartmouth Lacrosse Darien's Kat Collins and Riverside's Shannie MacKenzie earned Ivy League honors after helping Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Collins, a senior attack, was named the Ivy League's Player of the Year. She scored 33 goals and picked up 10 assists for Dartmouth, 11-4. Collins was a first team All-Ivy choice in 2009 before missing half of the 2010 season with an injury. Mackenzie, a co-captain, anchored the Big Green's defense. Staples Athletes Shine at Remingo Invitational Staples High School won the 4 x 800 relay and Lexie Schachne won the pole vault to highlight the team's track and field performances Saturday at the Remingo Invitational at Veterans Stadium in New Britain. The 4 x 800 team of Walker Marsh, Jack Roche, Jeff Caffery and Henry Wynne won in 8:11.92. Hamden was second in 8:15.83, followed by Amity in 8:27.76. Schachne won with a leap of 11 feet, 6 inches. In baseball, Norwalk reeled off six straight victories to jump squarely into the race. St. Joseph (11-1 in the league) is currently the No. 1 seed. Stamford Hockey Star Wins Smart Honor Stamford's Ryan Haggerty, who helped the United States win the gold medal in the International Ice Hockey Federal Under-18 World Championship, was named the winner of the 2011 Youth Achievement Award. Westport-based Smart Kids With Learning Disabilities selected Haggerty for the award. Haggerty, who will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, overcame severe dyslexia. Moms Make Quick Work of 10K The Mother's Day 10K held special significance for Darien's Liz Herbert and Wilton's Mary Dolan Zengo. They finished as the top two mothers in Sunday's race in Norwalk, coming in 12th and 14th, respectively. "I'm the first mom, so I'm happy,'' said Herbert, who ran 41:34 and was the third woman. Herbert had flown in from California on Saturday after visiting relatives. Her family did not attend the race with her. "They said we're not getting up for an 8 o'clock race." Her time was 28 seconds faster than last year, when she finished second. Herbert ran the Boston Marathon last month. Dolan …
